Anonymity?

In July 2008, a Briton, Grant Raphael, was ordered to pay a total of GBP 22,000 (about USD $44,000) for libel and breach of privacy. Raphael had posted a fake page on Facebook purporting to be that of a former school friend Matthew Firsht, with whom Raphael had a falling out in 2000.

Many users of social networks and the internet in general assume that much of their actions online are entirely anonymous. This feeling of anonymity often encourages over-confident behavior that you would not "get away with" in person. Users should be aware of the risks of bullying, and inappropriate or illegal content, and know how to deal with it through their social network. Many communities provide clear rules and procedures for these breaches, and serious offences can result in criminal proceedings. Hundreds of Facebook users have been arrested in Britain after posing in profile photos with illegal weapons.
