The Downsides to Social Networking

There are downsides to exposing information about yourself so freely on the internet, but with care the pitfalls of social networking can be avoided.

Who's viewing your profile?
A party hosted by Corey Worthington, a 16-year-old boy from Narre Warren in Melbourne, Australia, and advertised on MySpace, attracted 500 people. Police cars were attacked, and the dog squad and a helicopter were called in.

Information you place online can be seen by many more people than you might expect. Take care to not share information that could be misused. Adjust your profile settings carefully and censor the content you upload, and the community you upload it to.

Many employers now routinely check for your profile on a range of social networks. This can provide them with a great deal of information about the kind of person you are, and those whom you associate with. Take care to monitor your profile, the conversations had on it, and the images shown, and consider whether they would be appropriate for the eyes of an employer, parent, or teacher. You will be judged on the impression that your online persona conveys.
